Rangers are interested in Schalke 04 goalkeeper Martin Fraisl, according to The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones.
The lowdown
Rangers’ current number one Allan McGregor is out of contract at the end of the season, and The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell wrote at the weekend that the veteran netminder is currently expected to depart the club at that point.
Fraisl could also be a free agent, having only signed a one-year deal on his arrival at Schalke last summer after leaving Eredivisie outfit ADO Den Haag.
The 28-year-old Austrian, who hasn’t been capped by his country as of yet, is rated at £630,000 by Transfermarkt. According to WhoScored, he boasts excellent reflexes and has a penchant for coming off his line.
The latest
According to The Daily Mail, Rangers are among ‘a number of clubs across Europe’ who are eyeing the ‘experienced’ Fraisl.
The Gers are assessing the candidates to be their number one ‘keeper heading into the 2022/23 season. Norwich City, who sit a point above the relegation zone in the Premier League, are also named as a suitor for the Austrian.
The verdict
It looks like Rangers may be scanning the pool of free agents for a successor to McGregor. They’ve also been linked with St Johnstone’s Zander Clark, who has less than six months left on his deal in Perth.
A report from The Daily Record in November said that the Gers were watching him closely after talks with the Saints failed to yield an agreement.
The Light Blues’ options may be limited if bring in a goalkeeper on a free transfer is their plan, but it would at least allow them to use their budget in other priority areas.
